Background Information
The Wazhashk Native Performers come from a small "Indian" reservation
called Naicatchewenin First Nation in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. The size of the reserve amounts to 1501.8 hectares. Here is a satellite Pic that we found on Google maps. It shows some details about the reserve from up above.
This reserve is also known as "Northwest Bay" because of its geographical location, Northwest Bay of Rainy Lake.
Well, they're many branches to our history beginning with the creator, our
ancestors, the Ojibwe Nation,The Algonquin Language family, other nations and the deep impacts
they play on how we live today! We (Kyle And I) are very fortunate to come from a very musical
family background. My father (Louis Councillor) with his ojibwe songs and guitar, influenced us to perform. Both sides of our
family are proud to have uncles that play the guitar and other musical instruments. We are grateful to have music in our blood as well as our mind, body, and soul. Kyle
and I played guitar together quite a lot when we were younger, but stopped in
adulthood. We both performed individually, Kyle with his native flute, guitar, and
Myself (Orville) with the guitar. The past three years, we have been performing
together at various events. We have intentions to perform all over "Turtle Island"
(North America) and the world!
The
word "Wazhashk" is an Ojibwe word which translates
to "muskrat" in the english language. The significance of
the muskrat has meaning to the Wazhashk Native Performers because it is their clan/dodem (An ojibwe word meaning clan), and is a main character in an old Naniboozhoo story (legend). For enquiries about the muskrat legend, please offer gifts and tobacco to our community elders. This is an old tradition that should and will be kept alive.
